Yesterday, I read an article in TIME magazine which mentioned a new study that was provided by psychologists at the UC Berkeley. The article is here. It was so interesting that I made a speech which was inspired by the article. I recorded my speech on the Youtube video embedded below. I'd highly appreciate it if you'd give me a comment. Please click the Youtube video and listen to my speech without reading my script attached below. Can you understand what I said without the script? Script: How to be a leader. ¢£ Introduction Attention getter When you want to be a leader in your office or team, what do you think about the abilities which you should have? Can you answer my question quickly? It seems very difficult, I suppose. However, according to a new study provided by two researchers at the UC Berkeley, the answer is very simple. To determine how a leader takes control of a group, the researchers made interesting tests. They divided volunteers into four-person teams. Each team was given the task and competed to solve math problems. Afterward, the members rated one another on their level of influence and competence. Self involvement I read the study provided by the researchers in TIME magazine. Purpose statement So, let me talk about the study so that you can understand how to be a leader. Presentation plan In this presentation, I¡Çll tell you two points: first, speak loudly, and second, behave as if you are competent. Transition to Body Let¡Çs begin. ¢£ Body Point A First, I¡Çll tell you that you should speak loudly. According to the study, the people who spoke up the most were rated as leaders. Both players and judges considered them to be higher in such qualities as ¡Ègeneral intelligence.¡É The ones who did not speak much scored higher in traits like ¡Èuncreative.¡É But so what? The people who spoke up the most might be more competent so that they could speak loudly. Point B To test that theory, I¡Çll tell you my second point: you should behave as if you are competent. Before the team members solve math problems, they informed the researchers of their real-world math scores on the SAT college admission test. According to the study, you can find interesting facts. Often, the ones who were rated as leaders were not the ones who gave the correct answers! Moreover, they did not have enough SAT scores to solve the math problems given in the research! Transition to Conclution In conclusion, let me wrap up my presentation. ¢£ Conclution Purpose, Points, and Conclution In conclusion, let me wrap up my presentation. I talked about how to be a leader. Even though the ones who were rated as leaders were not more competent, dominant individuals behaved as if they were. They spoke loudly so that other team members rated them as leaders. So, if you want to be a leader, you should have a bigmouth: speak loudly and behave as if you are competent. In other words, if you do not speak much, your team members may not consider you as a leader even though you are competent. Closing Don¡Çt get me wrong. If you want to be a GOOD leader, needless to say, you should have true competence. Thank you for listening. |
